Over the last few weeks I've been researching copy right laws and game designers.I have learned that there are a lot of laws that go around designing video games or any work really. I find some of it cool while some of it disturbing. There is a double standard to game designs. it seems that the people/or companies that get sued for violating copyright are the small ones. While large gaming companies can get away with it such as Rockstar gaming. Then there are other games that use logos and other things that if found out they get sued instantly. So why should Small companies get sued while the large ones can do what ever they want?

Over the last week I have been researching Copyright laws and close calls between major companies, big companies against lone individuals. I have found that the line is not as straight as it seems because Rockstar games creator of the GTA series can get away with creating similar styles and concepts of cars and people. While in the case of Associated Press Vs Fairey. This case was about when a street artist took a picture of Obama and change it to be an political advertisement. The picture on the left is the one the Associated Press took. The one on the right is what Fairey did. They decided to split the profits from Faireys image.
www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2011/01/12/132860606/shepard-fairey-and-ap-settle-copyright-dispute-over-hope-poster Over the last week, in my Sci-Viz class we've learned about copyright laws and fair use. This applies to me because I will soon be making games for my class. If I do not carefully research my idea I could be copying someone else's work and that would violate the copyright laws. So to protect my work i'll always keep a copy of my final work this way if someone violates the copyright law I have proof that they did. I can also protect myself by researching an idea for work to make sure it's not already in use, and abide by all of the copyright laws. How I feel about the copyright laws is sort of a catch 22 because yes if you violate the laws companies can sue you but at the same time if it's not major chances are they are not going to sue you because they don't want to waste their time and money. However if it is major then you bet that their going to sue you. It all just depends on the circumstances. My opinion on the use of pirated work is depends on what it is for like if your like Xbox with that share thing that lets you send a copy of the game to your friend so he does not have to buy it, that's illegal and Xbox should be forced to delete that feature from every console and the company gets sued, or the FBI gets involved and arrests the CEO and shuts down Xbox for good and makes it illegal to own one that has that feature. Now if you are using a video of a game to show it on YouTube to talk about it no that should not be illegal to post a video that criticizes it. In daily life this law will make me a better person now because I now have learned how to use someone else's work without violating the copyright laws. It will make me better at citing sources for a project. This will affect my life as a future game designer because I will now have to do extensive research on my idea to make sure i'm not coping someone's game or work. This will also help me get better at being for creative in work too.
